Richter Typographic Calendar | Typography Exploration, Art Direction

Objective

Create a calendar which highlights four different  typographic treatments: fusion, fragmentation, inversion and separation.

Concept

The paintings by Gerhard Richter were chosen as the background for this project as they felt strongly connected to each other and to the season and typographic treatment being highlighted.

Optima Playing Cards | Packaging & Design

Objective

Design a deck of playing cards using only the letter forms found in Optima, the typeface created in 1958 by Hermann Zapf.

Concept

The cards evoke the time and place, when and where, Optima was created. The mid-century modern aesthetic (colors, hourglass female figures), the prominent art movements and players (ie. Charles and Ray Eames), and the design culture in the U.S.  in the 1950s (the Jack is a cocktail glass). are all reflected in the design of the cards.

Original typeface

Objective

Design an original typeface based on quick sketches done  in the first week of a 10 week  Type West summer workshop at Letterform Archive.

Concept

Gee! is a lightweight, stencil serf typeface with medium and translation contrast and a large x-height. The name was chosen to reflect the accessible, friendly, simple design and the soft swearing which came with learning RoboFont and letterform design at the same time. Think gee whiz! or Golly gee! These minced oaths (substitution of a g-word for God) fit this typeface perfectly
